Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889–1962) – Monte Carlo, bouquet of flowers. 1948. Monaco National Printing Office. 98 x 63 cm. Original poster, offset, mounted on canvas. Grade A. Whilst this tourist poster promotes the city of Monaco, the artist also highlights the Côte d’Azur’s long-standing tradition of flower cultivation. Particularly prevalent in neighbouring towns such as Nice, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Cannes and, of course, Grasse, these flowers evoke for the tourist the sense of abundance and sunshine offered by the shores of the Mediterranean. It is worth noting that the bouquet is held by a nude young girl in a clearly unashamedly erotic pose. She is the artist’s model from that time, Nadine Lhopitalier, later to become Nadine de Rothschild.
