Ludwig Holwein (1874–1949) – Burger Kehl Lausanne. 1908. Original poster, lithograph, mounted on canvas. Condition A–: two small scratches, minor imperfections in the mounting. 60 × 45 cm.
This was a men’s tailor who went on to become a clothing manufacturer, starting out in Zurich, Switzerland, before experiencing growth that led him to expand into Germany. The brand quickly recognised the value of advertising and stood out from the crowd by commissioning innovative poster artists such as Holwein and Leonhard Fries, who created numerous designs for them and contributed significantly to their success.
In its very modern and minimalist composition, one can nevertheless immediately recognise the fashion and sartorial art of the era, where, despite the apparent modernity of the style, people were still travelling by horse-drawn carriage.
