Description
Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) – Job. 1900. Masters of the Poster. Original poster, lithographic print, unmounted. Plate: 29.5 x 22.5 cm; sheet: 40.9 x 29 cm. Grade A. The most famous Art Nouveau poster artist produced several illustrations for ‘Job’ cigarette paper, owned by the Bardou family. This is the best known of them, both for the richness of its printwork—featuring extensive gilding—and for its sensual, almost erotic subject. A scandalous move, given that in the Belle Époque, a woman smoking tobacco was no small matter. The idea is that this woman, like tobacco, is meant to turn men’s heads. True to the oath he swore when he became a Freemason within the Grand Orient de France, he always championed the art of beauty as something accessible to all.
