Description
Battistello CARACCIOLO, known as "Battistello" (1578–1635) Various studies of drapery, including one for a seated figure of the Virgin Red chalk Height: 20 cm Width: 26.3 cm Provenance Unknown collector’s mark in the lower right-hand corner Paris, private collection. Note: This red chalk drawing, dating from between 1620 and 1630 during Caracciolo’s mature period, is comparable to drawings held at the Louvre, in Dijon, Stockholm and Naples*. These drawings share a similar approach to rendering the supple folds of heavy fabrics, and the study of the shirt sleeve rolled up on the arm serves as a preparatory sketch for the figure of Justice*, just as the seated figure is a preparatory sketch for The Rest of the Holy Family in the Pitti Palace, Cappella delle Reliquie. * Louvre, inv. 9605; Stockholm, inv. 1689/1863 and 1697/1863. ** Naples, Monte di Pietà, Sala della Congregazione
