IL TROMETTA (Pesaro, 1540 – Rome, 1611) Niccolò Martinelli da Pesaro, known as Study for a male figure Black chalk with white chalk highlights on blue paper on the front Study after an ancient torso, with a foot added, and sketch of a basilica plan Black chalk, red chalk on the reverse c. 1560/1564 H: 39 cm W: 22 cm Provenance: Italy, private collection. This large, previously unpublished sheet, likely a preparatory study for a religious scene such as the Marriage of the Virgin * with its effects of drapery featuring heavy, skilfully arranged folds, must date from the artist’s early years when he was working alongside Taddeo Zuccaro in Rome between 1560 and 1564. The study of an ancient torso in red chalk and the sketch of a plan for a basilica on the reverse, as well as the technique of black chalk and white chalk on the obverse, tend to confirm this dating.
