Description
HOLLAND, Late 17th – early 18th century
A pair of brass andirons known as ‘aux marmoussets’, decorated with a face featuring curly hair and scrolls, surmounted by spheres and spinning tops.
Height: 42 cm
Width: 36 cm
Depth: 62 cm
Note: This motif is frequently found in the interior scenes engraved by Abraham Bosse. The marmouset, a small grotesque figure, refers to the nickname that the Dukes of Burgundy and Berry, bitter at having been removed from power by Charles VI, gave to the former advisers of Charles V.
