Description
Eustache Le SUEUR (Paris, 1616–ibid., 1655)
Study of a man carrying books
Black chalk with white highlights on brown-primed paper
270 x 203 mm
Provenance: Berlin, Heinz Grunert, (1885(?)–1967), his mark on the reverse (Lugt; 3885) Berlin & Munich, Bernard Funck (1895–1993), his blue collection mark (Lugt 3835) on the reverse; France, private collection.
Our drawing may well be one of the early sketches for a figure intended for the major composition of Saint Paul at Ephesus, the painting of which is held at the Louvre and is thought to date from between 1645 and 1650. It can be compared in particular to a surviving sheet (Alain Mérot, Eustache Le Sueur, Arthéna, 2000, p.218, no. 65, fig. 219) in St Petersburg at the Hermitage Museum, which features very similar techniques: wash enhanced with white over a light sketch in black chalk.
Mounted and framed in natural patinated wood
