Vittorio Maria BIGARI (Bologna, 1692 – ibid., 1776) Saint Sebastian leaning on his armour, his weapons on the ground Black stone 333 x 240 mm Provenance: Genoa, private collection; France, private collection A renowned decorator, he began a series of decorative works for the Aldrovandi Palace in 1722, and the success of these projects ensured him a brilliant career. This previously unpublished drawing may date from around 1750 and depicts, in the manner of an academic portrait, a young man leaning on the attributes of a warrior, intended to represent Saint Sebastian before his martyrdom.
