Description
François DUHAMEL (1723–1801), admitted as a master craftsman in Paris on 3 February 1750, and SEUGNOT, in Paris, active until 1792. A violin-shaped clock with a wooden console and green-stained horn veneer, topped with stylised acanthus leaves and blooming flowers in gilded bronze. The chiselled and gilded bronze dial, featuring twenty-five enamelled pieces (one piece missing) with Roman and Arabic numerals for the hours, is signed ‘Seugnot à Paris’ in the centre. It features rich gilded bronze ornamentation, finely chased with openwork shells, foliage and stylised acanthus leaves. The case is hallmarked and bears the guild mark ‘JME’. Louis XV period Total height: 119 cm. Normal wear and tear. Dimensions of the clock case: Height: 83 cm Width: 42 cm Depth: 17 cm Dimensions of the console: Height: 31 cm Width: 43 cm Depth: 21 cm A few minor imperfections; pendulum missing. Note: François DUHAMEL, a cabinetmaker specialising in the manufacture of clock cases, practised on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine and specialised in the manufacture of clock cases. He collaborated notably with leading figures in French clockmaking. SEUGNOT, a clockmaker in Paris, is known for having opposed revolutionary ideas. In 1792, towards the end of his career, he refused to hang a banner over his shopfront during a procession; stones and mud were thrown at his shop.
