Description
Isaac THURET (1630–1706), admitted as a master craftsman in Paris before 1662. White marble portico clock with two foliated columns forming vases of flowers, surmounted by an urn with eagles. The enamelled dial, with hour and minute markers in railway track style and Arabic numerals, is signed ‘Thuret à Paris’. Beautiful gilded and chiselled bronze ornamentation, including a beaded frieze, cascading garlands, stylised and openwork acanthus leaves, and a radiating decoration. The multi-lobed base, decorated with palmettes, is supported by six spindle-shaped feet. Louis XVI period. Height: 44 cm Width: 29 cm Missing parts, damage Notes & bibliography: - Dictionnaire des horlogers Français - TARDY; Clockmaker listed on pages 614–615. - Isaac Thuret (1630–1706), born in Senlis and died in Paris, was one of the greatest clockmakers of the 17th century. Watchmaker to the King and later to the Academy of Sciences, he was based at the Louvre from 1686 and enjoyed great renown, praised in particular by Germain Brice and Leibniz.
