Description
Baron GERARD, known as "François Gérard" (1770–1837) Paris Oil on paper mounted on canvas on its original stretcher. Height: 47 cm Width: 39 cm Provenance France, private collection 19th-century gilded wooden frame Note: An unpublished study most certainly begun by Baron Gérard as early as 1804. According to his biographers, he had undertaken a composition illustrating the Judgement of Paris from 1804 onwards, which he continued to work on until 1812. This study on paper may well be a preparatory work for this painting, which he ultimately destroyed, dissatisfied with the result, and of which only various drawings* remain, two supposed fragments that went on sale at Artcurial in November 2014, and a sketch on cardboard for the composition, which confirmed the attribution. It should be noted that the fragment on canvas depicting Paris is similar in both dimensions and appearance to our oil on paper. • Louvre, RF 35623, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, inv. 2021.375.2. • Paris-London, David Jones Gallery, sketch for the composition, oil on cardboard.
