Provenance:
Purchased on 11 January 2003 from LE YACHT, 55 avenue de la Grande Armée, Paris.
Note:
This frigate is believed to be the Vestale, built in Brest in 1756, captured by the Royal Navy in 1761 and renamed HMS Flora. In 1778, during the battles off Rhode Island, the British scuttled the Flora on the coast; in 1782, the Americans salvaged her and refitted her in Boston. In 1784, she was repurchased by the Royal Navy and retained her name, FLORA; refitted in 1787, she was stationed in Senegal between 1788 and 1789. Sold in 1792 for privateering, she continued to sail under the French flag. She was finally captured in 1798 and destroyed by the British.
