DECORATION OF THE ORDER OF SAINT SAVA IN SILVER AND ENAMEL. SERBIA, 19th–20th CENTURY A white and blue enamelled Maltese cross surmounted by a crown; in the centre, an oval bearing the portrait of St Sava on one side and the date 1883 on the other; defects Height 6.5 cm, width 4 cm; weight 27 g SERBIAN SILVER AND ENAMEL ORDER OF ST. SAVA, 19TH–20TH CENTURY; DEFECTS The Order of St Sava was founded by King Milan I Obrenović of Serbia in 1883, taking its name from St Sava (1175–1235), son of Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Serbian state. He was the first Serbian archbishop (1219–1233) and the most important saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as the patron saint of Serbia. The order was established to honour those who had distinguished themselves in the sciences and the arts; it has not been awarded since 1945, following the fall of the Serbian monarchy.
