History: this chair is part of a commission for 30 chairs for the drawing room of the
grand apartments at the Château de Saint-Cloud, delivered in 1834. Several pieces
from this set are currently held in the Mobilier National. Louis-Alexandre
Bellangé (1797–1863), better known as Alexandre Bellangé, came from
a distinguished family of 19th-century cabinetmakers. His father was the official cabinetmaker to
Emperor Napoleon I. Upon the latter’s death, he took over the family business in
January 1825 and won medals at the exhibitions of 1827 and 1834. During the reign of King Charles X, he became
‘Cabinetmaker to the General Directorate of Crown Furniture’
.
