Description
RENOIR, Auguste (1841–1919).
Autograph signed letter and drawing addressed to André Albert
(1869–1954). Undated, 13 January 1880 and Friday 13 February
1880. 1½ pp. in-8.
Having been injured, Renoir is learning to paint with his left hand and
is making progress thanks to this exercise: ‘My dear friend, I shall be
fully recovered in a week or so. It is to Dr Terrier
that I owe this speedy recovery. He has been marvellous. I have
amused myself by working with my left hand; it is great fun and
it is even better than what I used to do with my right hand.
I think I did well to break my arm. It has helped me
make progress. Pangloss was right. I won’t thank you
for the distress my accident caused you, but I am very
flattered by it and can only praise myself for all the expressions of sympathy
I have received from all quarters. I have been showered with all sorts of
flattery. Despite that, I have no desire to do it again. A thousand
best wishes. Renoir”. On the third page is a receipt
signed by Renoir, then crossed out: “Received from Mr
Duret the sum of one hundred francs in full. 13 January
1880”. This refers to Théodore DURET (1838–1927), art critic,
avid traveller, discerning collector and friend of the
Impressionists.
