Description
MAXIMILIAN I,
Emperor of Mexico (1832–1867).
Oval-shaped reliquary death crown, adorned with a
broken column bearing the inscription ‘Regrets’, surmounted
by a medallion containing a photographic portrait of the
sovereign surrounded by two branches of flowers made from
Chauny glass beads. The whole is preserved under a domed glass cover
surrounded by a twisted frieze of black glass beads.
French work from the second half of the 19th century.
Signs of age, but in good overall condition.
H.: 35 cm – W.: 30 cm.
Background: on 19 June 1867, Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, born
Archduke of Austria, was executed by firing squad along with his two generals, Miguel Miramon and Tomás
Mejía, in Querétaro, Mexico.
