A GIFT
FROM SULTAN ABDUL-AZIZ (1830–1876).
POCKET WATCH.
Double-sided yellow gold case, decorated on one side with a
cartouche featuring a finely chiselled floral motif on a
guilloché background of circular waves, opening onto a matt yellow gold dial
with a central decoration engraved with a wreath of flowers.
Hours in rose gold Ottoman numerals, blued steel hands,
ink escapement mechanism set with 20 rubies,
model bearing the number 5004. Engraved on the inside of the case is
a dedication in French: ‘Presented by Sultan Abdul-Aziz,
3 July 1863’.
Hallmark: 18 K.
Swiss-made, dating from the second half of the 19th century.
Signs of age, but in good overall condition.
Diameter: 5.5 cm.
Gross weight: 115 g.
Provenance: this watch was presented on 3 July 1863 by Sultan Abdul
Aziz (1830–1876) to Mr Georges Konstantinidis, then director of the
Constantinople Stock Exchange, in gratitude for the establishment of
the Ottoman Imperial Bank, whose official launch was celebrated on 1 June
1863. This historic item has been preserved within the direct descendants of Georges
Konstantinidis to this day.
Background: Georges Konstantinidis (1809–1877) was a member of a
prestigious Greek family of financiers to the Ottoman court, based in
Constantinople.
