Biography: Joseph Fricéro (1807–1870). A French painter specialising in
watercolour and portraiture, he distinguished himself through a career as brilliant
as it was itinerant. Trained under Paul-Émile Barberi (1775–1847), he travelled
through Europe and the Mediterranean basin before being introduced to the imperial court
of Saint Petersburg by Prince Grigori Gagarin, a close associate of Tsar Nicholas I
of Russia. Returning to Nice in 1952, he settled there permanently and pursued
a distinguished career until his death. His work is now held in the
collections of the Musée Masséna in Nice and the Hermitage Museum in
Saint Petersburg.
Provenance: former collection of Victor de Cessole (1859–1941).
