History: this work is related to the portrait painted in July 1844
by the artist, currently in the Royal Collections in Brussels,
inv. 0105TA, in a version slightly larger than the one we are presenting
(see reproduction in the catalogue of the exhibition ‘Louise d’Orléans, First
Queen of the Belgians, a Romantic Destiny’ held at the Château de Chantilly,
2025, page 103). This painting, commissioned by Queen Louise of Belgium, daughter
of Louis-Philippe, King of the French, was intended to form a set with the
two portraits depicting her sons, Leopold, Duke of Brabant, and Philip, Count of
Flanders. The three works, all of the same size, were intended for the sovereign’s private
apartments. Queen Louise, who greatly admired Winterhalter’s work,
presented her family with full-length and oval versions of her children’s portraits.
The artist’s studio also produced, at her request, smaller-format versions.
King Louis-Philippe also commissioned these three so-called
‘half-length’ portraits of his grandchildren in 1845 for the Château d’Eu. Of the portrait we
present here, a bust version is held at the Belvue Museum, in the
Musée de la Dynastie collection, inv. A2200. Provenance: Belgian private collection.
