Description
RARE HONOURARY RIFLE CERTIFICATE BELONGING TO CITIZEN ETIENNE MAGOT, A GRENADIER IN THE 38th LINE INFANTRY HALF-BRIGADE On vellum, with an engraved header reading ‘IN THE NAME OF THE FRENCH PEOPLE, BONAPARTE, FIRST CONSUL OF THE REPUBLIC’. ‘In the engagement which took place on 28 Thermidor, Year VII, during the capture of Magenthal Fort in Switzerland, in which this soldier was among the first to rush into the fort’s entrenchments, which were taken by storm, and helped to seize a cannon from the enemy. He is hereby awarded, as a national honour, a rifle of honour”. Done on 10 Prairial, Year XI. Signatures: ‘Bonaparte’ (secretary), Hugues Maret, and Berthier. Dry seal: ‘In the name of the French People’. 34.5 x 42.5 cm (Minor wear)  Background: Whilst the facts mentioned regarding the musket of honour are similar, the place and date of the action are different, as is sometimes the case. The most plausible version is that of the Battle of Hohenlinden (12 Frimaire Year IX), in which the 38th Demi-Brigade took part. A rare certificate for an honourable musket awarded to Citizen Etienne Magot, a grenadier in the 38th Line Infantry Demi-Brigade
