LETTERS PATENT CONFERRING THE TITLE OF BARON OF THE EMPIRE UPON GEORGES MERGEZ (1772–1846), ADJUTANT-COMMANDER On vellum bearing the letterhead ‘Napoleon, by the Grace of God, Emperor of the French, King of Italy, Protector of the Confederation of the Rhine, Mediator of the Swiss Confederation’. Coat of arms painted in natural colours in the top left-hand corner (signs of wear). Dated 19 September 1810 at Saint-Cloud. Signature of Cambacérès and a fine signature of Emperor Napoleon I (‘NAPOLE’). With its ribbons and red wax seal depicting the Emperor in majesty and the grand imperial arms (minor chips). Diameter: 12 cm Accompanied by the end piece of the white metal case, with the seal protector. 45 x 59 cm 46 x 60 cm Provenance: - Sotheby’s auction, London, 1985. - Private collection.
