MERMOZ Jean 4 letters ‘Jean’, Mainbressy and Soissons [1920?], to his ‘dear Mum’; 3 pages in-8, and 2½ pages in-4 on letterhead from the Grand Café de la Bourse in Soissons. Mainbressy. – Wednesday. News of his grandparents and his aunt; he will speak to her ‘regarding your war damages’… (on the reverse, a letter from Mrs Gillet, his mother). – 5 April. He has opened the solicitor’s letter, and it is ‘a great disappointment […] Well, what can you do? Don’t worry about it; what’s done is done. We’ll start a new life for ourselves; and besides, there’s peace of mind on many counts’. He’s off to Soissons [to see his father] to ‘sort things out, very calmly, I promise you, but irrevocably’… Soissons. – Thursday. “I’m bored to death here. […] My father has to come with me to Paris and I probably won’t be able to get rid of him until Monday”… – Friday. He sends his “dear Mum” a big kiss; he’ll be taking the train to Paris the next day, but won’t be back until Monday morning: “I’ve bumped into two mates from Thionville and we’re going to spend the evening together.
