Description
MERMOZ Jean
2 letters ‘Jean’, Casablanca and Juby, October–November 1926, to his ‘Beloved Mum’; 2 pages, each in-4 size, the second bearing the Lignes Aériennes Latécoère letterhead.
Casablanca, 19 October. ‘These are my first few days in Casa, for on my arrival I had to leave for Juby the very next day after a day-trip from Toulouse to Casa that was almost effortless. Then, on my return, I had to set off again the very next day to stand in for a sick colleague.’ He is feeling better: “My ravenous appetite has returned. Insatiable! […] The Amilcar has been chugging away as fast as it can for the three days since I got back. It’s still very hot. My dog Algo and ‘my Solas’ are doing well. A party to welcome me back, naturally... […] Ah! How good it is to be in good health… And then the fresh air of the hangars, the heady scent of petrol and oil, the endless kilometres in my old taxis – all that has perked me up in no time”…
Juby, 10 November. “I’ve got a lot on my mind at the moment because, as well as Dakar, I’m doing Spain, which will help get me back on my feet a bit and make me forget the unfortunate disappointment I’ve had and its disastrous financial consequences. […] I’ve heard through the grapevine that my nomination for the Legion of Honour on New Year’s Day has been postponed until next year. The reason is my plans to leave home. I couldn’t care less!! Apparently, I’m due to set off for America in April. Naturally, that’s what’s holding me back now. […] I’m writing to you from Juby. Lola’s sitting next to me, pulling funny faces and doing all sorts of other things too… This morning, she climbed onto my head and smacked me right on the shoulder with a slice of toast, which really annoyed me… Anyway! She regularly takes her little trips right next to me and sleeps the whole way with her hands over her ears. At home, nothing new… I’m going to be moving house yet again. The landlady is really starting to get on my nerves. It’s amazing how clingy a woman can become!”…
