Description
MERMOZ Jean 2 letters ‘Ton Jean’, Casablanca, 11 and 27 February 1927, to his ‘Beloved Mum’; 2 pages in-4 and 1¼ pages petit in-4 in blue ink. 11 February. No news is good news. She must be reassured: ‘You know full well I’d rather kill a poor man’s cow than kick the bucket! I’m as fit as a fiddle, spitting fire like a Thermogène advert – in short, things are going full steam ahead! The Moors are becoming increasingly worrying, but we’ve got better equipment; in short, the risks are lower than they were a few months ago. Latécoère is officially launching the France–South America route on 1 September. So I’m planning to set off around June. […] So I’ll come and see you in April or May. Besides, if for one reason or another I don’t go, I’ll be leaving the route around that time.’ He’s waiting for a reply from his Bolivian contact, and is asking for information ‘regarding the Lille–Douai–Le Bourget route […] currently under development. That might also be interesting, and it would be a good deal, wouldn’t it? Although, you know, it would seem a bit restrictive in terms of scope and the horizons would be rather limited!”… 27 February. “I returned yesterday morning and am setting off again this very morning on a convoy to Saint-Louis in Senegal”… Correspondence, nos. 104 and 105.
