MERMOZ Jean L.A.S. ‘Jean’, Toulouse, 3 October 1927, to his ‘Beloved Mum’; 2 pages, in-4, on letterhead from the Grands Cafés de Toulouse. Test flights for night-time operations. ‘I had an excellent journey and since then I’ve had no time to rest. On arrival, I managed five consecutive flights on our new aircraft and by 10 o’clock that evening I was carrying out night flight tests on those very same aircraft. You can imagine, after a night on the train, just how fit I was!! Ever since I arrived, I haven’t stopped. Day and night flights. I might even be doing the Toulouse–Alicante round trip by night soon. [...] Life is lovely. I’m so happy to be flying again in such an exciting way! I wonder what I’ll do when I can no longer fly. What a void! Just coming back to the hangars, breathing in that lovely smell of burnt oil and petrol, and I don’t feel like the same man anymore! I feel completely reborn and my enthusiasm knows no bounds! I may not be able to come and see you until the end of October. I also have my navigator’s exam to sit. Once my night training is complete, I shall ask for eight days’ leave’… Correspondence, no. 124.
