Description
MERMOZ Jean L.A.S. ‘Ton Jean’, [Buenos Aires] Monday [October–November 1928], to his ‘dear Mum’; 4 pages, small quarto. My mother’s letter arrived ‘in 9 days and I was the one who brought it. Now tell me that aviation doesn’t bring us closer together! In just two months’ time, it’ll finally take us 7½ days. Our seaplanes are going to be fine-tuned and put into service between the islands, and they’ll be a world away from those bloody patrol boats, which I hope will be completely phased out within six months.” He is due to set off for Santiago de Chile “on the Pacific coast”, and will “at last cross those famous Andes Mountains I’ve been hearing about for so long. So I’ve got a load of things to sort out, and I was only told this afternoon”… He is worried about his mother’s health and mentions Fernand Delty, whom he will try to bring over now that he knows his trade well: “If only you knew, for someone like me who arrived without any connections, having worked my way up, just how dreadful it now feels to have to make use of the trust that is placed in me so completely and blindly”… “My plans are more solid than ever. I’m awaiting replies from Paris. Expect me to turn up unannounced – oh, only for a very short while, because I’ll be returning to France in February, setting off in April. Insh’Allah!”… Source: - Jean Mermoz (1901–1936); - Gabrielle Gillet-Mermoz (1880–1955); - Then passed down through the family
