MERMOZ Jean L.A.S. ‘Mermoz’, Buenos Aires, 25 December [1928], to his ‘Beloved Mum’; 1¼ pages, folio size, on tissue paper, sent via Aeropostal. He is sending her two cheques, having found his chequebook ‘after 8 or 10 days of searching. […] How did you spend Christmas? […] As for me, I spent it back home, on a beach in Brazil. We did, however, manage to have a rather cosy Christmas Eve. At two o’clock in the morning, with the help of a few bottles of wine and champagne that I’d had on board the flight to Buenos Aires, I sang *Minuit chrétien* at the top of my voice with my mechanic, both of us being ‘black’ enough for the occasion. And after a quick nap under the wings, we set off again at 3 o’clock in the morning with a bloody, indecipherable hangover. I’ll never forget that breakdown! I’m thinking of setting off next month. The Director has asked me for two months’ leave in Paris to attempt my crossing and has requested that no one try to thwart my plan, as has already happened in Paris regarding the purchase of the aircraft. – Ah! If only I could manage it! What luck! Instead of effective support, I’ve been left to fend for myself, supposedly because afterwards I won’t be returning to the Company.
