MERMOZ Jean
L.A.S. ‘Ton Jean’, Santiago de Chile, 4 March 1929, to his ‘Beloved Mum’; 2 pages, in-4, on letterhead from the Hotel Victoria, Santiago.
Crossing the Andes with the Count de La Vaulx; plans for an expedition to break the world distance record.
‘A few words from Santiago de Chile, where I have just arrived after a 3,000 km journey with the Count de La Vaulx across Patagonia, the Southern Cordillera and Chile. […] Barring any change of plan, I’m leaving for France on 23 March […] My aeroplane has been sold to me, but on condition that I undertake an initial flight from Paris to Buenos Aires, if possible non-stop. Perhaps I shall not make it that far, but I shall at least break the world distance record. Then, if I succeed, Maison Bernard will arrange for me to fly from Paris to New York at their expense. I accept, of course. So much so that next month I hope to have the pleasure of kissing you. I’m setting off again the day after tomorrow for Buenos Aires, still with the Count de La Vaulx, bound for Peru and Buenos Aires. Then I’ll make preparations for my escape. I’ll return there by air in the first few days of May. The whole management is in a panic, as you can imagine. M. de Sieyès, the big boss, has telegraphed to Paris and made me give my word that I won’t leave the Company. They couldn’t believe it! »…
