He is lazy and lacks courage: ‘Life isn’t much fun, and that’s all there is to it… I could do with two months in the depths of the countryside, all on my own. I’m craving some peace and quiet to soothe my nerves, which are in a bit of a shambles. It’s simply a rough patch to get through, like all the others I’ve had – that we’ve been through – over the last eighteen months. You switch your burden and start again, until weariness sets in once more. This affliction can only be cured with strong doses of willpower. As long as the remedy lasts, we hold out. Fortunately, the satisfaction I get from my job renews that willpower, but if I didn’t have that, I’d have to go far away to avoid breaking down… sometimes!
