Description
MERMOZ Jean Autograph letter signed ‘Jean’, Marseille, 14 March [1932], to his ‘Beloved Mum’; one and a half pages, in-4. He expresses concern about his mother’s legal troubles and reassures her: ‘All this is nothing but a ridiculous farce with no real significance in life; human justice is one big joke that must be taken as such […] I know how much you are suffering, and when one is not guilty, I know how repugnant it is to be forced to clear one’s name. But do bear in mind that this is merely an incident caused by people’s baseness and malice, and one that cannot affect you. […] As for me, I believe in an immanent justice […] I still love you with the same deep affection, and I suffer far more often than you realise from the pain you are going through. It’s just that I don’t show it, and whilst I may hide it behind a somewhat brusque manner or a veneer of cold philosophy, I suffer no less for it’”… Source: - Jean Mermoz (1901–1936); - Gabrielle Gillet-Mermoz (1880–1955); - Passed down through the family
