WEATHER MAP WITH HAND-DRAWN FLIGHT PLAN THAT BELONGED TO JEAN MERMOZ, DATED JUNE 1929
The map background is printed on paper and labelled: “PILOT CHART OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN / By the Hydrographic Office of the Navy Department, Washington, D.C.”
[Based on research carried out in the early 19th century by Matthew Fontaine Maury, Lieutenant in the US Navy]
Bearing handwritten annotations: a line drawn from ‘V.(illa) Cisneros’, ‘Pointe du Pêcheur’ to Cap St Roc, passing by the Cape Verde Islands annotated ‘Sault’, ‘Fego’ and ‘Santiago’.
A second line running from Saint Louis to Natal marks the locations of ‘Becfigue’, ‘Phocée’, ‘Bemtivi’ and ‘Cigogne’ – the various aviso vessels of the Company which were stationed offshore and could come to the aid of an aircraft in distress if necessary.
