Description
BALBO, Italo (1896–1940), Italian aviator and minister. L.S., Tripoli, 28 January 1936, to Jean MERMOZ; one and a half pages, quarto, typewritten, on letterhead bearing the title ‘Il Maresciallo dell’Aria Governatore della Libia’; in Italian. He follows his epic and successive crossings of the Atlantic on a daily basis. Mermoz remains the most valiant of aviators, so greatly admired, whose courage is matched only by the greatness and nobility of his soul. He thanks him for his friendship towards Italy at a time when it is unjustly facing an absurd and dangerous coalition of nations, which have arbitrarily chosen to support a government of plunderers and slave-holders… He hopes to be able to welcome him to Tripoli… Enclosed is a postcard bearing the inscription ‘Long live Mermoz! Italo Babo’, also signed by the actress and aviator Viviane ELDER, [Tripoli 7 May 1936], with a stamp and address (Tripoli. Passaggiata Conte Volpi); and the handwritten text of a telegram from Balbo to Mermoz, congratulating him on his 12th crossing.
