Description
MERMOZ Jean L.S., Le Bourget, 4 August 1936, to the editor of *L’Intransigeant*; 1 typewritten page, in-4 format (carbon copy). Mermoz protests against an article on the deaths of his comrades Genin, Savarit and Aubert [on 2 August], and requests the publication of a letter of correction: ‘Mr Peyronnet de Torrès’s claims are false: our colleague Genin was neither rude nor harsh; he never ordered a pilot to take off when the weather was truly impossible. […] We, the flight crew of Air France, have lost colleagues whom we loved dearly. We will not allow their memory to be tarnished by a gentleman who is not part of our profession and who did not know them. As for the fanciful account regarding the equipment and the gonio, your editor may well be a good journalist, but he knows nothing about commercial aviation’… Enclosed are 1 handwritten letter and 5 letters from Roger Peyronnet de Torrès to Mermoz, 1930–1931 (1 p., in-4 each, on L’Intransigeant letterhead), friendly letters of congratulations or arranging meetings; plus one letter from G. Gile-Nicaud, 22 December 1927, asking Mermoz to support the ‘Bal des Petits Lits Blancs’ organised by the newspaper, where he would be presented to the public ‘alongside pilots who, like you, have distinguished themselves through great flights ’ (1 p., in-4 on L’Intransigeant letterhead). Provenance: - Jean Mermoz (1901–1936); - Gabrielle Gillet-Mermoz (1880–1955); - Passed down within the family
