IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF OBJECTS, PHOTOGRAPHS AND DOCUMENTS RELATING TO ALFRED AUGER’S CAREER IN CIVIL AND MILITARY AVIATION
Comprising:
- A collection of decorations: Third Republic officer’s star, silver, gold and enamel model with braiding; 1914–1915 War Cross with four bronze palms; Third Republic Military Medal, in silver, vermeil and enamel (minor chips), bronze Combatant’s Cross, 1914–1918 Commemorative Medal, bronze Inter-Allied Medal, bronze Verdun Medal. Ribbons with fastening clips (the one for the Inter-Allied Medal is heavily damaged).
- Certificates of appointment as Knight and Officer of the Legion of Honour in the name of Alfred Auger, with the dispatch tube for the Knight’s certificate.
- Rare pilot’s certificate made of brass and silver-plated metal, numbered ‘B 2790’ on the reverse. Its paper certificate bore the number 614.
- A pair of binoculars used by Alfred Auger, in their case, marked ‘Lemaire à Paris – Lumineuse’.
- Flight logbooks and notebooks, including the flight logbook for the Caudron 286/VII (in which he was killed), a flight log covering the period from 1922 until his death in 1936, and three logbooks.
- A collection of nineteen war diaries by Alfred Auger in which he recorded his military and civilian activities, as well as more general reflections on the events of the war.
- Four collections of documents mounted on heavy paper:
Details of his military service, letters of appointment, authorisation to wear the Inter-Allied Medal, newspaper cuttings, certificates of conduct, identity cards.
A collection devoted to his work as a balloon pilot, including various letters, photographs and gondola diagrams.
A collection devoted to his work as a glider designer and pilot, notably including numerous notes and plans relating to the Abrial glider which he designed.
A substantial collection containing numerous documents and photographs relating to his wartime years, including safe-conducts, the text of his commendations, a notebook containing commendations and photographs of his comrades, and a pay book
- A photo album documenting Auger’s work in civil aviation throughout his life (215 photographs), including views of hot-air balloons, various air shows in which Auger took part after the war, and views of gliders, including the one designed by Auger. A photograph of his aeroplane following the fatal crash in 1936. The vast majority of the people and aeroplanes are identified.
- A substantial photo album (over 300 photographs) chronicling Alfred Auger’s wartime experiences, from his departure from his home in Neuilly in 1914 until the end of the war. Numerous photographs of squadron personnel, aeroplanes and Auger receiving his decorations. The vast majority of the photographs are labelled with names and locations.
- Numerous photographs of Alfred Auger as a child, whilst serving with the 3rd Engineers’ Regiment, during and after the war, some in uniform in front of his aeroplane, and towards the end of his life.
- A bound eulogy with a hand-drawn cover enhanced with gouache.
- A stereoscope with a very large collection of stereoscopic plates depicting numerous battlefields, aeroplanes and aircraft.
- Three family biographies devoted to Alfred Auger and his son André Auger.
