Description
FLIGHT LOGS OF FLYING OFFICER EDMOND DE GAVARDIE
Set of two logs belonging to Edmond de GAVARDIE of No. 12 Squadron
The first logbook was bound in cloth between 21 April 1915 and 12 August 1916, and the second from 13 August 1916 to 1919–1920.
These logbooks record all of our pilot’s sorties as well as the engagements in which he took part, supplemented by annotations such as ‘I am wounded’ on 7 February 1917 (he is indeed noted as having been seriously wounded on that day in his biography). Aircraft shot down and notable engagements are marked with a cross pattée.
Enclosed are three photographs of Edmond de Gavardie in his aeroplane, one of which is dedicated to his father: ‘To my beloved father, with fond memories, Edmond, 16 January 1916’, a full-length photograph inscribed ‘To our national Ludion, 17 December 1916’, along with a letter dated 14 December 1916 addressed to Warrant Officer Gavardie informing him of the deaths of Lieutenant Coutand, de Lanier, de Cuviller and Ringuet (on 2 December 1916, whilst serving with Squadron C53), who went missing during a photographic sortie, accompanied by a photograph of graves.
A fragment of thick card covered with paper, probably from a Nieuport aircraft belonging to Edmond de Gavardie
