Description
FRAGMENT OF THE CRADLE OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON I Rectangular piece of wood mounted on a card bearing the handwritten words "Remains of Napoleon I's cradle. Restored by myself on the occasion of the bicentenary of his birth. In Ajaccio on 15 August 1969", signed "Petrocchi". Also stamped on the back "Michel Petrocchi, officier-radio, 12 cours Napoléon, 12, Ajaccio". Fragment: 2.5 x 1.5 cm. Frame: 31 x 35 cm. Provenance: Paul Lucchini Collection, Ajaccio, Corsica. Historical background: On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1969, there was an exhibition called "NAPOLEON AND HIS FAMILY". Mr Olieu, who owned the cradle of Napoleon I presented at the exhibition, had it restored for the occasion by his friend Mr Michel Petrocchi. The problem was a side rod in three pieces that had been damaged by worms. Mr Michel Petrocchi, having done so, made some rare souvenirs from the debris, such as the lot we are presenting. Exhibition: "Napoleon and his family", Palais Fesch, Ajaccio, 9 July-30 September 1969. The restored cradle was presented under Number 185: "This cradle, which was used for her children, was given by Madame Mère to Rosane Po, wife of Nicolo Paravicini, first cousin and brother-in-law of Charles Bonaparte, on the occasion of the birth of their daughter Marie-Antoinette. It belonged successively to Letizia Paravicini (1800-1890), Nicolo's youngest daughter and wife of General Viscount Tiburce Sébastiani; Marie Sébastiani, their great-niece, who died in 1901 and married Pierre-Paul Cuneo d'Ornano; Tiburce, their son, who died in 1943; Dominique, his brother, who died in 1950; and Madame Philippe Olieu née Letizia Cuneo d'Ornano, his daughter. Expert: Mr Maxime CHARRON.
