Description
19th century Italian school, after Giovanni Battista Lampi (Romeno 1751-1830 Vienna) Portrait of Archduchess Elisabeth Wilhelmine Louise of Habsburg (1767-1790) née de Wurtemberg, first wife of the future Emperor Francis II (1768-1835). Oil on panel. 22 x 16 cm. On the back, handwritten annotations incorrectly identifying the model as the singer Ida Simonetti, favourite of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pierre-Léopold (1747-1792), who reigned from 1765 to 1790. Presented in an attractive stuccoed and gilded wooden frame with rocaille decoration (Restoration to a knot in the panel. Frame reattached). Our painting is a charming copy in reduction of the portrait of Archduchess Elisabeth, dating from 1785, one of the masterpieces of the favourite portraitist of the Viennese court: Lampi, now in the KunstHistorisches Museum (155 x 112 cm., inv. GG_8781). It is one of the rare effigies of this princess, who met with a tragic fate: she died in childbirth giving birth to her first child after only two years of harmonious married life. Expert : Pierre-Antoine MARTENET.
