Lucien Joseph FONTANAROSA (1912-1975) Portrait of Madame Denise Marmey, wife of Doctor Jean Marmey, gynaecologist in Rabat, Morocco. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1936 lower left. 100 x 80 cm. Indentation, missing lower right. Provenance: Former collection of Doctor Jean Marmey, gynaecologist in Rabat, Morocco. This painting dates from the second half of 1936, the year in which Lucien Fontanarosa stayed in Morocco. After being awarded the Grand Prix d'Afrique du Nord by the City of Paris in 1935, he spent a year working in Morocco: from October 1935 to March 1936, he spent six months in Fez, travelled to Tafilalet, then returned to Paris to sit the concours de Rome. In July 1936, he was awarded the Premier Grand Prix. From August to October 1936, he returned to Morocco, stopping off in Casablanca, then settling in Rabat, from where he made frequent trips to the south. Works from this period are few in number and rarely appear in auction rooms. We would like to thank Stéphane Löber for the details he provided on this work, which will be included in his archives and those of the Lucien Fontanarosa Association.
