François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) "Sunset in the clearing at Thuile", study. Oil on paper laid down on cardboard. Traces of drawing pins in the corners. 23.4 x 30.4 cm. Signature stamp in black (Lugt, L2132A). Former Thiollier collection. Certified on the back by Pierre Andry-Farcy (1882-1950) curator of the Musée de Grenoble. Note by the expert C. Boyer Thiollier: We can certainly situate this oil sketch near the Bois de Thuile (Morestel, Isère) where Ravier liked to go. He captured only the coloured impressions and the light from the sky. The trees and foliage are merely pretexts and secondary contrasts brought to life by orange and green-yellow patches. Ravier studied his skies in quick, nervous strokes, very finely worked with nimbly brushed crosses and chevrons.
