NEVERS A very rare plate with a curved rim, featuring a revolutionary polychrome decoration depicting the ‘revolutionary spanking’ in a central medallion, with garlands of leaves separating flowering stems on the rim. 18th century.Diameter: 22 cm. Two interpretations could explain the iconography of this piece. Firstly, the spanking meted out to the nuns by the Ladies of the Halle following the decree of 13 February 1790, which abolished religious communities with perpetual vows. Another famous spanking was that administered on 13 May 1793 to Théroigne de MÉRICOURT, accused of supporting BRISSOT, leader of the Girondins. She was singled out by the Jacobins, who inflicted the ‘republican spanking’ upon her. She was stripped naked and spanked in public until MARAT intervened to put an end to the punishment. A similar piece is held at the Rouen Ceramics Museum, inv. 2291 (illustrated in *Revolutionary Faience: Collections of the Rouen Ceramics Museum*, exhibition catalogue, p. 75, fig. 391).
