Fascicle XXVI” by Max Loreau, Fondation Dubuffet, Paris, 1975 (reproduced under no. 73, p. 28) Note: This drawing, dated 17 August 1970, belongs to one of the most sought-after periods in Jean Dubuffet’s output: that of the preparatory works relating to the “L’Hourloupe” monuments, executed in marker on kraft paper, at a time when the artist was developing the most ambitious architectural projects of his career. This sheet displays the essential characteristics of this major phase: a proliferation of organic forms, expanding cells, fragmented and unstable structures, ghostly silhouettes and ‘white reveries’ that make up a universe in perpetual metamorphosis, straddling the boundaries of sculpture, architecture and the imagination. These drawings constitute the visual laboratory from which Dubuffet developed his monumental environments and inhabited architectures, culminating in the realisations at Périgny and the famous Villa Falbala. The graphic works from 1970 linked to the monumental ‘L’Hourloupe’ projects are among the most sought-after on the market, with some commanding prices close to 40,000 euros, owing to their experimental nature, their inventive power and their direct link to the artist’s major architectural realisations.
