Description
Pablo PICASSO (1881–1973) Reclining Nude – 1901/1902 Watercolour on paper Signed lower left 12 x 19.5 cm Artist’s certificate Provenance: - Galerie Michel Couturier, Paris Bibliography: - Zervos Catalogue Raisonné, Volume 21, no. 325, p. 122 Note: This watercolour belongs to Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period, one of the most significant phases of his early artistic career. Deeply affected by the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas, the artist explored themes imbued with melancholy and solitude. Blue tones dominate his works and reinforce their emotional impact. Picasso was interested in fragile and marginalised figures, whom he depicted with great humanity. The theme of the nude also occupies an important place in his work. Far removed from the idealised representations of the academic tradition, his nudes prioritise the expression and authenticity of the body. The reclining nude evokes intimacy, vulnerability and contemplation. Through the delicacy of the watercolour and the simplicity of the composition, Picasso endows his model with a silent and moving presence.
