Description
Marcel VERTÈS (1895-1961)
Presumed portrait of Elsa Schiaparelli, circa 1937
Ink on paper, signed lower right (rubbing).
32 x 24 cm
Marcel Vertès and Elsa Schiaparelli struck up a close friendship when they collaborated on the advertising campaign for Schiaparelli's "Shocking" perfumes from 1937 onwards. In this portrait, we find characteristic elements of the fashion designer, such as the gloves, cigarette, headdress, posture and facial features.
The quick, light style of the ink is reminiscent of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. Marcel Vertès illustrated his drawings for the 1951 film Moulin rouge, and Elsa Schiaparelli designed the costumes.
The type of representation could also herald the "Cigarette" silhouette (1939) by Schiaparelli.
