Jacob Massy belonged to a dynasty of Huguenot clockmakers originally from Blois, France. Like many Protestant families following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the Massys settled in London in the late 17th century.
His father, Nicholas Massy, was already a renowned clockmaker based in London. Admitted as a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1715, Jacob Massy practised until around 1733. Although less famous than Thomas Tompion or George Graham, he was one of the most highly regarded London clockmakers of his time, and his pieces remain highly sought after today by collectors of English timepieces.
