Description
Nikolaas Pieneman (1809 - 1860), King William II oversees the exercises of the mounted artillery (Gele Rijders) in the dunes near Scheveningen. Oil on panel, 33 x 47 cm. NB: The painting compares very well with the work: "An exercise of the mounted artillery on the heath near Zeist from 1843" by the same painter. Currently in the possession of the Museum of the Mounted Artillery Corps, 't Harde, Gelderland. According to a label on the back of the painting, we see King William II on the white horse and Jonkheer Coenraad Diderik Pontiaan Singendonck (1796–1864) next to him. The latter was commander of the Gele Rijders from 1852-1855. The gentlemen knew each other because Singendonck's uncle fought with William II at the Battle of Waterloo and both were wounded. The painting is provenance of the Van Brugghen family, Singendonck's brother-in-law.
