Charles-François Nivard, known as "Nivard de Nancy", surrounded himself in Paris with the precursors of the Barbizon School, such as Simon-Mathurin Lantara (1729 - 1778). Lantara inevitably influenced Nivard's technique in terms of the effects of light and his choice of representations of the skies and clouds that are omnipresent in his canvases.
Known for his lively landscapes, Charles François Nivard is famous for his urban or rural architecture in a natural setting. The houses blend harmoniously into a peaceful, serene environment. Charles François Nivard was trained by Simon-Mathurin Lantara and exhibited his first works at the Salon of 1783. He was admitted to the Académie Royale de Peinture in 1784 but never became an academician. In the years that followed, he worked hard and exhibited regularly at the Salon until 1804.
His paintings were very popular with art lovers and can be found in the collections of the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, the Marquis de Ségur and the Marquis de Montesquiou.
