(Accidents and old restorations) Provenance : - Old paintings, Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Maître Loudmer), 29 October 1985, no. 72 (after Veronese). - Ulysse MOUSSALLI Collection (1899-1988) Bibliography : U. Moussalli, "Le Processus d'élaboration et de création dans les grands ateliers Venitiens du XVIème siècle notamment chez Veronese". Congrès International d'Histoire de l'Art, in Arte Veneta, September 1955, pp. 285-288 (modello by Veronese). Our painting is a repeat of the composition in the Louvre (560 x 330 cm). This large format was originally part of the ceiling of the Council of Ten room in the Ducal Palace in Venice ("Palazzo dei Dogi"), commissioned by the Republic of Venice and painted in 1553-1554. With this great ceiling decoration, the twenty-five-year-old Veronese established himself as a master to be reckoned with. In 1787, the painting was removed by Napoleon's army and placed in the Louvre. Expert : Cabinet Turquin
