PROVENANCE
Probably from the Charles Wickert collection, according to a handwritten initials on the reverse.
François Quesnel was a painter, miniaturist and draughtsman active at the court of the late Valois and early Bourbon reigns. Of Scottish origin on his father's side, he established himself in Paris as one of the most refined portraitists of his time.
The model, with blue eyes and depicted in a three-quarter view, wears the ruff and trimmed beard characteristic of the nobility at the end of the 16th century.
