JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC SCHALL (Strasbourg, 1752-Paris, 1825) THE DANCER IN A BLUE DRESS KNOWN AS THE DANCER WITH A VEIL Canvas Carved wooden frame Inscription on the reverse of the frame "H Fragonard"; Label on the reverse of the frame "n° 485"; on the reverse of the frame red wax stamp with the arms of the Rothschilds, label on the reverse of the frame with the n° "34" (the 1931 sale) Old restorations The dancer in a blue dress, canvas, with restorations 32,50 x 24,50 CM - 12,8 x 9,6 IN. Provenance : Arthur de Rothschild Collection (1851 - 1903) ; Collection of his nephew Baron Henri de Rothschild (1872 - 1947); Sale of the collection belonging to Baron X... (Henri de Rothschild), Paris Galerie Georges Petit (Mes Lair-Dubreuil), 15 May 1931, no. 34, reproduced (77,000) ; Our painting has been confused with Schall's painting of the same subject, La Danseuse en robe bleue dite la danseuse au voile, and of the same dimensions (provenance: sale of the Groult collection, 20 November 1941, Linz museum no. 2148, at Pardo in 1952). Only the treatment of the hat and its feathers, the design of the veil behind the hat and the green leaf in the bodice distinguish our two paintings.
