Petrus van Schendel exhibited at the Salon in 1861, No. 2815 A Young Girl in Front of a Stall; light effect.
Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1822 to 1828 under Mathieu-Ignace Van Brée, Petrus van Schendel adopted the technique of the fine Dutch painter Gérard Dou and the luminism of Godfried Schalken, specialising in night scenes illuminated by a candle in the painting.
Nicknamed "Monsieur Chandelle", he developed a singular mastery of candle and lamp light that made his work immediately recognisable. After settling permanently in Brussels in 1845, Petrus van Schendel became one of the most sought-after painters, winning a gold medal in Brussels in 1845 and a 2nd class medal in Paris in 1847. He exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1867.
